Bristol began for a town about the Gloucestershire aspect in the Avon, but as it grew it prolonged through the river into Somerset. In 1373 Edward III proclaimed "the city of Bristol with its suburbs and precincts shall henceforth be individual with the counties of Gloucester and Somerset ... and that it ought to be a county by by itself".[fifty]�
